Fender Electric Guitars

Fender is one of the most respected guitar manufacturers, responsible for putting versatile, solid-bodied electric guitars on the commercial map and is a hugely iconic, sought-after brand. Fender electric guitars are the choice for countless rock legends including Keith Richards and Bruce Springsteen who usually play Telecasters, while Eric Clapton and Dave Gilmour have been known to play various Stratocasters and even have artist models named after them! Here at DS Music we are proud Fender electric guitar dealers and stock a wide range of their timeless Telecaster and Stratocaster models along with other more unusual shapes, as well as guitars from their cheaper Squier by Fender range.

How an electric guitar makes a sound

The electric guitar has a fretted neck, a solid wood body and is traditionally fitted with 6 strings; the vibrations from which are converted by the electromagnetic pickups into electrical impulses which are subsequently converted by an amplifier into sound. The output of an electric guitar is an electric signal, and therefore there is plenty of scope to manipulate this signal using effects pedals, which give it vast tonal possibilities.

Which pickup options to choose?

The type of pickup(s) on an electric guitar can alter the tone considerably; the ‘single coil’, usually found on Fender Stratocasters and Telecasters, create classic blues and rock sounds, whereas ‘humbuckers’ (which are 2 single coil pickups together) produce a much fatter and heavier rock/metal tone and are usually found on Gibsons and some special edition Fender electric guitars such as the HSS Telecaster or Stratocaster. The Stratocaster usually has 3 pickups and the Telecaster usually has 2 pickups and both come with a pickup selector so that you can choose which out of the 3/2 you want to use.

Other options to consider?

Electric guitar fretboards come in either a rosewood or a lacquered maple, the latter produces a slightly brighter tone than the rosewood, however both options are as popular as each other. The body of electric guitars also come in various woods including alder, pine, ash, mahogany etc which alter the tone slightly. If you are just starting the electric guitar you need not worry about these options and then as you progress to an intermediate level upwards you will soon start to realise what type of tone you are looking for and can start experimenting.
