Me and My Piano Part 1 is a delightful book for young beginners, which turns the piano keys in to an amazing musical rainbow! This colourful book is full of really fun pieces and games to make learning the piano for the first time really enjoyable.

Gradually introduces new notes using a ‘musical rainbow’!

The best-selling Me and My Piano Part 1 book uses a unique learning method devised by Dame Fanny Waterman and Marion Harewood, where the 7 musical notes (A-G) are each assigned one of the 7 colours of the rainbow, shown on a rainbow coloured piano diagram at the beginning, and throughout the book, with clear, colourful fingering diagrams. One at a time, you are familiarised with notes C-G in the right hand, then notes F-C in the left hand, gradually building up the rainbow of notes, before two handed playing is introduced.  The chapter for that note is themed to that note’s colour with comical illustrations, and teachers or parents are encouraged to label the piano keys with coloured stickers (not included) to help children learn where each of the notes are.

Fun for young beginners

There are 50 short songs with simple words and melodies in Me and My Piano Part 1, that have fun titles like ‘Jungle drums’, ‘Crocodile’ and ‘Jelly on a plate’, and many well-known songs, such as ‘Yankee Doodle’, and ‘Pussy Cat’ - the five finger position is used throughout (each finger plays one note, hands stay with both thumbs on middle C) and the music is in large-print to make it easy for little ones to follow. For some of the pieces you are encouraged to clap and say or sing the words before playing, which really helps beginners understand different rhythms and learn how they are notated. The fun pieces in Me and My Piano Part 1 are all broken down into chapters and as you come to the end of each chapter there is a selection of short pieces using all the notes you have learnt so far to help reinforce what you have learnt. Different dynamics, articulation, and other musical notations are also gradually introduced and there is an optional teacher piano accompaniment part included.

Learn theory and musician ship through fun games

Basic music theory is taught through tips boxes throughout Me and My Piano Part 1, giving you bite size chunks of theory knowledge as you go along. You are then encouraged to recall this knowledge and learn through fun & colourful music games, quizzes and crosswords, on ‘Monkey puzzle’ theory pages, practising writing treble/bass clefs and notes, fill in bar lines, and write and name notes - a few examples include, answering the questions then spelling out the words by playing the notes on the piano and ‘Musical detective’ where you answer questions on a piece, improving your musicianship. When you complete Me and My Piano Part 1 there is a certificate for your teacher to fill in and put on the wall!
