Everything you need for your ABRSM Grade 8 Piano scales test

As part of your ABRSM grade 8 piano exam, you will be asked to play some piano scales from memory. The ABRSM Grade 8 Piano Scales book contains all the scales and arpeggios you will need to know for your exam, along with a useful information page at the front of the book about: the benefits of practising scales, useful information about pitch, tempo, fingering, and how you will be tested/what the examiner will be looking for on the day of your grade 8 piano exam. All of the scales in the ABRSM Grade 8 Piano Scales and Broken Chords book are printed in appropriate time and key signatures, with (optional) fingering suggestions:

  • Scales (similar motion)in C, D, B, F#, F, Eb, Ab/G#, Db/C# majors & minors (minors both harmonic andmelodic), legato or staccato as directed by the examiner, hands together andseparately, 4 octaves
  • Scales a third apart in the keys above (majors & harmonic minors only), legato or staccato as directed by the examiner, hands together, 4 octaves
  • Scales a sixth apart in the keys above (majors & harmonic minors only), legato or staccato as directed by the examiner, hands together, 4 octaves
  • Legato scale in thirds C and Bb majors, hands separately, 2 octaves
  • Chromatic scales a minor third apart beginning on any notes named by the examiner, legato or staccato as directed by the examiner, hands together, 4 octaves
  • Chromatic scales in minor thirds beginning on A#/C#, legato, hands separately, 2 octaves
