ABRSM grade 7 piano sight-reading preparation
As part of your ABRSM grade 7 piano exam, you are asked to play a short piece you’ve not seen before. The ABRSM Grade 7 Piano Sight-Reading book has example exercises to help you develop your sight reading skills, and guidance notes to give you an idea of what to expect!
23 example exercises
The 23 exercises in this ABRSM Grade 7 Piano Sight-Reading book are all typical examples of what you will encounter in your grade 7 piano exam, which is a piece of around 16-20 bars long, in the same time and key signatures as Grade 6 (4/4, 3/4, 2/4, 3/8, 6/8, 9/8, 5/4 or 5/8, inkeys up to 4 sharps/flats (major and minor)), with the addition of 7/8 and 7/4, some tempo changes, the 8va sign and the use of the una corda pedal. All the pieces have titles, to give you an idea of their mood, and the music is marked with dynamics, performance directions, articulations, fingerings and pedalling.
The sections of your ABRSM grade 7 exam
Your ABRSM grade 7 piano exam is made up of four sections: a short sight-reading test like this, scales and arpeggios, three pieces chosen by you from the ABRSM Grade 7 Piano pieces book, and aural tests. For more info about ABRSM exams, please visit our ABRSM exams guide!
