Focusrite Scarlett Audio Interfaces FAQs

How many inputs do I need?

If you are just starting to record 2 simitanious inputs will be fine, however if you plan to record a band live or a drum kit you will need more inputs. The 6i6 has 6 inputs which gives room for growth and is a very popular model.

What is the difference between line, mic (XLR) and instrument inputs?

XLR (microphone) are used for microphones, instrument inputs are generally used for guitars, bass guitars, etc and line inputs are used for line level signals such as keyboards.

What are the outputs used for?

Typically 2 outputs (left and right) are used to plug monitor speakers into. Other outputs can then be used to send out to a console or a tape machine, etc or guitarist may want another output so they can reamp. Outputs, mainly power users, may also require to connect the interfaces to consoles, patchbays, or to other interfaces for redundancy, or to hard patch the outputs to external gear and then feed the gear back to the inputs. The Focusrite Scarlett range is great for beginners but is also caters for professional users with complex requirements.

What is Phantom Power?

Condenser Microphones are usually used in recording studios as dynamic microphones are not as sensitive to higher frequencies. Condenser microphones usually need 24v-48v of power for them to work so the 48v Phantom Power feature provides this.

What is the Focusrite Microphone Pre-Amp and why do I need it?

Focusrite legendary microphone pre-amps are used the top professional recording studios all over the world. All of Focusrite’s Scarlett Audio Interfaces come with high-quality award-winning Focusrite preamps. By using a microphone pre-amp you will achieve greater clarity and sound.

What is the PAD & DIRECT MONITOR?

Some of the audio intefaces feature a PAD function for high-output guitars or microphones and a DIRECT MONITOR control for a low-latency mix of input and playback signals.

What can I use the headphone output(s) for?

The monitor headphone output(s) allow you to listen to your session whilst tracking (live), editing and mixing. Some of the Focusrite Scarlett audio interfaces have 2 headphones ouputs which can be used to connect a second pair of headphones or for plugging in computer speakers or occasionally used as an output for other devices.

What is a SPDIF port?

The S/PDIF port featured on some of the Focusrite Scarlett Audio Interfaces allows two channels of SPDIF Format Uncompressed Digital Audio (Not Surround 5.1 or 7.1 or 7.1 Dolby or DTS Audio) to be passed along a single unbalanced co-axial connection. You can use the SPDIF to connect a device with a digital output or input to avoid unnecessary conversion from analogue to digital and vice versa. For example you could connect a microphone pre-amp via the SPDIF input.

What is the optical input used for?

You can connect devices that use Optical ADAT such as audio interfaces that offer Stand Alone (Scarlett 18i20) functionality - so for example you could purchase 2 x Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 audio interfaces and then connect them together via the Optical ADAT input/output to expand the number of inputs you have.

What is MIDI?

MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) can be used to connect MIDI devices such as MIDI keyboards. Some MIDI keyboards do not connect via USB and you'll need to connect the keyboard to the 5 pin midi port on the interface.

Will the Focusrite audio interfaces work with Pro Tools?

Yes, Focusrite Audio Interfaces are perfect for Pro Tools - we are also Pro Tools authorised dealers - see our Pro Tools page to browse the range.
