Abracadabra Trumpet is a really fantastic book for beginner trumpet players, and a popular favourite among music teachers and pupils alike. You will learn both how to play the trumpet and basic music theory through fun, simple exercises and playing short songs, with the option of playing along to the included backing CD.

Perfect for beginners

Abracadabra Trumpet is for especially for young players, with a really fun design, illustrated with cartoons by Dennis Tinkler. It’s full of tunes from a wide range of styles, including folk, traditional, hymns, classical and even a few Christmas songs – pieces such as ‘Waltzing Matilda’, ‘Dance of the comedians from The Bartered Bride’ and ‘Walking in the Air’. Each section introduces a new idea, including notes with pictures indicating fingerings and example notations, explanations of note values, and time signatures. There are between 1 and 5 fun example tunes after each new concept is introduced, so you can practise them in context before moving on.

Improve your musicianship & theory

Designed for new players to work through the book from start to finish, Abracadabra Trumpet covers all aspects of technique and theory important for beginners. There are helpful teaching notes and tips throughout the book explaining musical notations, terms, tonging and fingering techniques, how the trumpet works and practising tips. To improve your musicianship there is a helpful list of ‘do’s and ‘don’ts’ for student trumpeters at the beginning. The manuscript includes dynamics and breath marks, and some Italian terms indicating tempo, and there is a glossary of Italian terms in the back, along with a collection of important scales and arpeggios. To get the most out of Abracadabra Trumpet we recommend you work through it with your teacher.

Play with your friends or along to the backing CD

Among the many fun pieces in Abracadabra Trumpet, there are some duets and trios, so you can practise playing with others. It also introduces you to improvisation through fun call and response sections to play with a friend or teacher. Most pieces have a backing track to play-along to and example performances on the accompanying CD. The Abracadabra Trumpet  book is also suitable for other brass instruments in the treble clef.
